Baggage Storage Systems

The requirement for bag storage systems has developed significantly over recent years and this has given rise to development in automated systems to store bags within an airport baggage handling environment.

Drawing on well established and developed warehouse storage solutions where crane and rack systems are prevalent, has enabled the fast track establishment of high quality, high capability storage capabilities for bags.

At the heart of our system is the DuoSys miniload crane technology from our parent company Daifuku. Having installed in excess of 24,000 storage and retrieval machines throughout the logistics industry their experience is virtually unrivalled, as is the development which has gone into the DuoSys product. DuoSys encapsulates the many years of application experience to be the pinnacle of todays crane technology. Amongst other leading and innovative features it offers the ability for 2 cranes to work simultaneously throughout the entire length of the storage aisle. This permits a number of operational modes to be provided as required by the operational demands, but significantly also further increases bag storage density without compromising system resilience.

Bags and cranes, have typically not gone well together because of the large variety of sizes and shapes of baggage. The new Baggage Tray System (BTS) solves this problem by transporting bags in trays. It is these trays that allow baggage to be handle as a standard unit load by the cranes and thus BTS enables to full realisation of the benefits of crane based systems in baggage handling applications.

Storing bags in a crane and rack based system provides:

  • Very high bag storage density, so precious space in the airport is efficiently used.
  • Fully automated bag storage, for efficient and error free operation.
  • High throughput rates which allows bags to be stored as early bags, pre make-up buffer or peak shaving.
  • Very high resilience through elimination of single point failures allowing the store to continue to operate with only a small reduction in throughput while any failure is repaired.
  • Very low maintenance requirement compared with any other storage technology, maintenance is also simply effected with easy access to components.

These advantages are why many of the worlds leading airports are now considering this technology for their bag storage requirements
