Application

The Daifuku Logan Baggage Tray System (BTS) is designed to handle bags in their own individual tray throughout their entire journey through the Baggage Handling System. The trays are each equipped with RFID tags which carry a unique identity which allows each tray, and therefore the bag is contains, to be positively tracked through the system. Bags loaded into trays enjoy the physical protection of the tray, together with bag jams being virtually eliminated. The trays themselves are designed to carry bags through security screening machines thereby allowing the bag to remain in the tray for its whole journey through the handling system to its make up position. Standardised trays also provide the ideal unit load basis to permit use of a wide range of storage technologies most notably advanced crane systems.

The BTS consists of modules that allow an entire baggage handling system to be built that typically mirrors and builds on the type of module often seen in conventional conveyor based systems. The system has the capability to convey bags at up to 10m/s to ensure longer journey distances, such as transfers between terminals, are completed as quickly as possible.


BTS Components

Tray

The tray is manufactured from a composite material designed to allow security screening of the bag whilst on the tray. It carries an RFID tag for positive tray tracking and forms the basis for handling the bag throughout the system. There are also 2 Out Of Gauge Tray sizes.

Bag Sizes

The range of bag sizes that can be handled in the standard and OOG1 and OOG2 trays is shown below. As bags are conveyed through the system in trays there is an inherent ability to handle bags with straps and stability issues which cannot normally be accommodated on conventional conveyor systems.

Straight Conveyor

The straight conveyor is the basic conveyor element within the system. The twin strand belt technology provides cost effective and efficient conveying of the standardised tray design.

Merge/Diverge

The merge and diverge units provide the main routing element with the system allowing flows to be combined and divided according to the flow requirements. It is primarily this unit which dictates the throughput achievable with the system and its class leading 2,700 tray/hour rate allows it to meet the demands of the most rigorous systems.

Vertical Sorting Unit

The vertical sorting unit provides the same function as its counterpart in conventional systems, it allows a tray flow to be divided into 2 vertically separated streams based on individual tray selection or route selection. Its gentle action and space saving design maximises the system design potential.

Right Angle Transfer

The right angle transfer unit allows trays to be selected from the main line and removed at right angles onto a spur. This type of transfer has many applications in the BHS system but particularly suits the interface with cranes for advanced bag storage functions.

Inclined Conveyor

Tray Loader

The tray loader is the primary means of placing bags into trays for their journey through the system. A top loading approach is selected for its reliable operation and gentle bag handling. Bags arrive at the loading station loose on conveyor and are dynamically inducted into trays which pass underneath the loading conveyor.

Static Discharge

The static discharge is the first of the two means of discharging bags from trays at the end of their journey through the BHS, typically at the make up position. This variant offers lower throughput by stopping the tray before tilting it to discharge the bag to a transition chute back to a conventional conveyor or other chute arrangement.

Dynamic Discharge

The dynamic discharge is the high performance form of discharge, it achieves its performance by tilting the tray to discharge the bag whilst it is still moving thereby reducing the cycle time and enhancing the performance.

Daifuku Logan IS deliverING the pilot baggage handling system standard 3 migration of GROUPE ADP at PARIS - Charles de Gaulle terminal 3

DAIFUKU LOGAN, Ivry (November, 2016) — Daifuku Logan Ltd, a subsidiary of Daifuku Co. Ltd Airport Technologies Group and a leading provider of airport baggage handling systems – announced today a Standard 3 Baggage Handling contract with Groupe ADP in France.

Daifuku Logan has been entrusted by Groupe ADP the migration of the baggage handling system security process from “Standard 2” to “Standard 3” at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Terminal 3.

This project includes the entire replacement of the conveying systems, the baggage security process with the integration of “Standard 3” machines and automatic sortation functions.

The first phase of the project took place in Hall A and has been operational since the beginning of April 2016. The new system has a capacity of 1,800 bags per hour with two “Standard 3” screening machines. In the second phase, Hall B is currently being upgraded and will be operational in the first quarter of 2017.

This pilot project is an unique opportunity for Groupe ADP to obtain invaluable experience for future “Standard 3” upgrades of all their baggage handling systems in Paris-Orly and Paris-Charles de Gaulle.
